1883-1954. President of Brazil 1930-45 and
1951-54. He overthrew the republic 1930 and
in 1937 he set up a totalitarian, pro-fascist
state known as the Estado Novo. Ousted by a
military coup 1945, he returned as president
1951 but, amid mounting opposition and
political scandal, committed suicide 1954.
