1664-1726. English Baroque architect and
dramatist. He designed Blenheim Palace,
Oxfordshire, and Castle Howard, Yorkshire,
and wrote the comic dramas The Relapse 1696
and The Provok'd Wife 1697. He was imprisoned
in France 1688-93 as a political hostage by
the French authorities.
