1883-1955. French artist. He painted
townscapes of his native Paris, many
depicting Montmartre, often from postcard
photographs. Utrillo was the son of Suzanne
Valadan, a trapeze-performer who was
encouraged to become an artist herself after
posing as a model for many painters of the
day. His work from 1908-14 is considered his
best.
