In 1579, the union of seven provinces of the
N Netherlands: Holland, Zeeland, Friesland,
Groningen, Utrecht, Gelderland, and
Overijssel, which became the basis of
opposition to the Spanish crown and the
foundation of the present-day Dutch state.
