1753-1806. Japanese artist of the ukiyo-e
(`floating world') school, who created muted
colour prints of beautiful women, including
informal studies of prostitutes. His style
was distinctive: his subject is often seen
close up, sometimes from unusual angles or
viewpoints, and he made use of bold
curvaceous lines and highly decorative
textiles.
