1893-1981. US chemist. In 1932 he isolated
heavy water and discovered deuterium; Nobel
prize 1934. He was director of the War
Research Atomic Bomb Project, Columbia,
1940-45. His books include studies of nuclear
and atomic structure, and the origin of the
planet and of life.
