1898-1986. US cardiologist who developed
surgery for `blue' babies. Such babies never
fully develop the shunting mechanism in the
circulatory system that allows blood to be
oxygenated in the lungs before passing to the
rest of the body. The babies are born
chronically short of oxygen and usually do
not survive without surgery.
