1603-1659. Dutch navigator. In 1642, he was
the first European to see Tasmania. He also
made the first European sightings of New
Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji. He called Tasmania
Van Diemen's Land in honour of the governor
general of the Netherlands Indies; it was
subsequently renamed in his honour in 1856.
