1857-1930. 27th president of the USA 1909-13,
a Republican. He was secretary of war 1904-08
in Theodore Roosevelt's administration, but
as president his conservatism provoked
Roosevelt to stand against him in the 1912
election. Taft served as chief justice of the
Supreme Court 1921-30.
