1790-1862. 10th president of the USA 1841-45,
succeeding Benjamin Harrison, who died after
only a month in office. His government
annexed Texas 1845. Tyler was the first US
vice president to succeed to the presidency.
Because he was not in favor of many of the
Whig Party's policies, he was constantly at
odds with the cabinet and Congress until
elections forced the Whigs from power.
