1874-1949. Uruguayan artist, born in
Montevideo. In Paris from 1926, he was
influenced by Mondrian and others and, after
going to Madrid in 1932, by Inca, and Nazca
pottery. His mature style is based on a grid
pattern derived from the aesthetic proportion
of the golden section.
