1928- . US actress who became the most successful child star of the 1930s. Her films include Bright Eyes 1934 (Academy Award), in which she sang `On the Good Ship Lollipop'. Her other films include Curly Top 1935 and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm 1938. Her career as a film star was virtually at an end by the time she was 12. As Shirley Temple Black, she became active in the Republican Party and was US chief of protocol 1976-77. She was appointed US ambassador to Czechoslovakia in 1989. Her autobiography is Child Star 1988.
