ousted Sukarno to become president in 1967.
He ended confrontation with Malaysia, invaded
East Timor in 1975, and reached a cooperation
agreement with Papua New Guinea 1979. His
authoritarian rule has met domestic
opposition from the left. He was re-elected
in 1973, 1978, 1983, and 1988.
