1724-1806. English artist, known for
paintings of horses. After the publication of
his book of engravings The Anatomy of the
Horse 1766, he was widely commissioned as an
animal painter. Stubbs began his career as a
portrait painter and medical illustrator in
Liverpool. In 1754 he went to Rome,
continuing to study nature and anatomy.
Before settling in London in the 1760s he
rented a farm and carried out a series of
dissections of horses, which resulted in his
book of engravings. The dramatic Lion
Attacking a Horse 1770 (Yale University Art
Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut) and the
peaceful Reapers 1786 (Tate Gallery, London)
show the variety of mood in his painting.
