1811-1896. US suffragist, abolitionist, and author of of the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, first published as a serial 1851-52. She was a daughter of Lyman Beecher, and in 1836 married C E Stowe, a professor of theology. Her book was radical in its time and did much to spread anti-slavery sentiment, but has later been criticized for sentimentality and racism.
