1925-1988. British Labour Party politician.
An active member of the Co-operative
Movement, he entered Parliament in 1957 and
held junior posts under Harold Wilson before
joining his cabinet in 1967. In 1974 he
disappeared in Florida in mysterious
circumstances, surfacing in Australia, amid
suspicions of fraudulent dealings. Extradited
to Britain, he was tried and imprisoned for
embezzlement. He was released in 1979, but
was unable to resume a political career.
