1928- . German composer of avant-garde music,
who has continued to explore new musical
sounds and compositional techniques since the
1950s. His major works include Gesang der
Junglinge 1956 and Kontakte 1960 (electronic
music); Klavierstucke 1952-85; Momente
1961-64, revised 1972, Mikrophonie I 1964,
and Sirius 1977. Since 1977 all his works
have been part of Licht, a cycle of seven
musical ceremonies, intended for performance
on the evenings of a week. He has completed
Donnerstag 1980, Samstag 1984, and Montag
1988.
