AD 359-408. Roman general, of Vandal origin,
who campaigned successfully against the
Visigoths and Ostrogoths. He virtually ruled
the western empire as guardian of Honorius
(son of Theodosius I) but was executed on the
orders of Honorius when he was suspected of
wanting to make his own son successor to
another son of Theodosius in the eastern
empire.
