1904-1975. US film director who began as a
director of photography. He made films such
as Swing Time 1936 and Gunga Din 1939, and
his reputation grew steadily, as did the
length of his films. His later work included
A Place in the Sun 1951, Shane 1953, and
Giant 1956.
