1894-1969. Austrian film director who lived
in the USA from childhood. He worked with
Marlene Dietrich on The Blue Angel/Der blaue
Engel 1930 and other films. He favoured
striking imagery over narrative in his work,
which includes Underworld 1927 and Blonde
Venus 1932.
