1888-1969. German physicist. Stern studied with Einstein in Prague and Zurich, where he became a lecturer in 1914. After World War I he demonstrated by means of the Stern-Gerlach apparatus that elementary particles have wavelike properties as well as the properties of matter that had been demonstrated. He left Germany for the USA in 1933. Nobel prize 1943.
