1902-1968. US novelist. His work includes Of
Mice and Men 1937, The Grapes of Wrath 1939,
Cannery Row 1945, and East of Eden 1952.
Nobel prize 1962. He published Tortilla Flat
1935, a humorous study of the paisanos
(farmers) of Monterey California; many of his
books deal with the lives of working people.
East of Eden was filmed with James Dean. His
later work includes Winter of our Discontent
1961.
