1891-1959. English painter, who was born and lived in Cookham-on-Thames, Berkshire, and recreated the Christian story in a Cookham setting. His detailed, dreamlike compositions had little regard for perspective and used generalized human figures. Examples are Christ Carrying the Cross 1920 and Resurrection: Cookham 1924-26 (both Tate Gallery, London) and murals of army life for the oratory of All Souls' at Burghclere in Berkshire.
