1934- . Nigerian author, who was a political
prisoner in Nigeria 1967-69. His works
include the play The Lion and the Jewel 1963;
his prison memoirs The Man Died 1972; Ake,
The Years of Childhood 1982, an
autobiography, and Isara, a fictionalized
memoir 1989. He was the first African to
receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, in
1986.
