1924- . Portuguese socialist politician,
president from 1986. Exiled in 1970, he
returned to Portugal in 1974, and, as leader
of the Portuguese Socialist Party, was prime
minister 1976-78. He resigned as party leader
in 1980, but in 1986 he was elected
Portugal's first socialist president.
