English four-piece rock group (1982-87) from
Manchester. Their songs, with lyrics by
singer Morrissey (1959-) and tunes by
guitarist Johnny Marr (1964-), drew on
diverse sources such as rockabilly, Mersey
beat, and the Byrds, with confessional humour
and images of urban desolation.
