1881-1943. Polish general and politician. In
1909 he formed the nationalist military
organization, which during World War I fought
for the central powers. He was prime minister
1922-23 and war minister 1923-25. In Sept
1939 he became prime minister of the exiled
Polish government, which transferred to
London 1940. He was killed in an air crash.
The intransigence of his government was a
cause of Anglo-Russian friction, but
allegations that his death was not accidental
are unsubstantiated.
