1484-1531. Swiss Protestant, born in St
Gallen. He was ordained a Roman Catholic
priest 1506, but by 1519 was a Reformer, and
led the Reformation in Switzerland with his
insistence on the sole authority of the
Scriptures. He was killed in a skirmish at
Kappel during a war against the cantons that
had not accepted the Reformation.
