1935- . South African politician, member of
the white opposition to apartheid. A
co-leader of the Democratic Party (DP), he
was elected to parliament in 1989. A former
academic and journalist, Worrall joined the
National Party and was made ambassador to
London 1984-87. On his return to South Africa
he resigned from the NP and in 1988
established the Independent Party (IP), which
later merged with other white opposition
parties to form the reformist DP, advocating
dismantling of the apartheid system and
universal adult suffrage.
