1720-1772. American Quaker, born in Ancocas
(now Rancocas), New Jersey. He was one of the
first antislavery agitators and left an
important Journal. He supported those who
refused to pay a tax levied by Pennsylvania,
to conduct the French and Indian War, on the
grounds that it was inconsistent with
pacifist principles.
