1892-1942. US painter based mainly in his
native Iowa. Though his work is highly
stylized, he struck a note of hard realism in
his studies of farmers, such as American
Gothic 1930 (Art Institute, Chicago). He also
painted landscapes and somewhat humorous
scenes, for example Daughters of Revolution
1932 (Cincinnati Art Museum), which satirized
membership in patriotic societies.
