1727-1759. British soldier. He fought at the battles of Dettingen, Falkirk, and Culloden. With the outbreak of the Seven Years' War (the French and Indian War in North America), he served in Canada and played a conspicuous part in the siege of the French stronghold of Louisburg 1758. He was promoted to major-general 1759 and commanded a victorious expedition against Montcalm in Quebec on the Plains of Abraham, during which both commanders were killed. The British victory established their supremacy over Canada.
