1625-1672. Dutch politician, Grand Pensionary
of Holland and virtual prime minister from
1653. His skilful diplomacy ended the Dutch
Wars of 1652-54 and 1665-67, and in 1668 he
formed a triple alliance with England and
Sweden against Louis XIV of France. He was
murdered by a rioting mob.
