1860-1938. US novelist who created the genre
of the Western. He was born in Philadelphia,
a grandson of the British actress Fanny
Kemble, and became known for stories of
cowboys, including The Virginian 1902. He
also wrote Roosevelt: The Story of a
Friendship 1880-1919 1930, about his
relationship with US president Theodore
Roosevelt.
