politician. She was Labour minister for
prices and consumer protection 1974-76, and
education and science 1976-79. She became a
founder member of the SDP in 1981 and its
president in 1982. In 1983 she lost her
parliamentary seat. She is the daughter of
the socialist writer Vera Brittain.
