1888-1958. Australian polar explorer, a pioneer in the use of surveys by both aircraft and submarines. He studied engineering, learned to fly in 1910, and visited both polar regions. In 1928 he flew from Barrow (Alaska) to Green Harbour (Spitsbergen), and in 1928-29 made an Antarctic flight that proved that Graham Land is an island. He also planned to reach the North Pole by submarine.
