1759-1833. English reformer who was
instrumental in abolishing slavery in the
British Empire. He entered Parliament in
1780; in 1807 his bill for the abolition of
the slave trade was passed, and in 1833,
largely through his efforts, slavery was
abolished throughout the empire.
