1840-1911. English mountaineer. He made the
first ascent of many Alpine peaks, including
the Matterhorn 1865, and in the Andes scaled
Chimborazo and other mountains. He wrote
Scrambles amongst the Alps 1871 and Zermatt
and the Matterhorn 1897.
