Whittington, Dick (Richard) English cloth
merchant who was mayor of London 1397-98,
1406-07, and 1419-20. According to legend, he
came to London as a poor boy with his cat
when he heard that the streets were paved
with gold and silver. His cat first appears
in a play from 1605.
