1878-1976. US physiologist whose research
interest concerned the formation of
haemoglobin in the blood. He showed that
anaemic dogs, kept under restricted diets,
responded well to a liver regime, and that
their haemoglobin quickly regenerated. This
work led to a cure for pernicious anaemia.
