c. 1450-1523. Italian painter, active in
central Italy. About 1483 he was called to
the Vatican to complete frescoes on the walls
of the Sistine Chapel. He produced large
frescoes in Orvieto Cathedral, where he
devoted a number of scenes to The Last
Judgment 1499-1504. The style is sculptural
and dramatic, reflecting late 15th-century
Florentine trends, but Signorelli's work is
more imaginative. He settled in Cortona and
ran a workshop producing altarpieces.
