1920- . US Republican politician, economics adviser to President Reagan 1980-82, and secretary of state 1982-89. Shultz taught as a labour economist at the University of Chicago before serving in the 1968-74 Nixon administration, including secretary of labour 1969-70 and secretary of the Treasury 1972-74. As State Department secretary, he was in charge of the formulation of US foreign policy. He was pragmatic and moderate, against the opposition of Defence Secretary Caspar Weinberger.
