1872-1951. Japanese politician and diplomat,
prime minister 1945-46. As foreign minister
1924-27 and 1929-31, he promoted conciliation
with China, and economic rather than military
expansion. After a brief period as prime
minister 1945-46, he became speaker of the
Japanese Diet (parliament) 1946-51.
