1885-1972. US astronomer, whose study of
globular clusters showed that they were
arranged in a halo around the Galaxy, and
that the Galaxy was much larger than
previously thought. He realized that the Sun
was not at the centre of the Galaxy as then
assumed, but two-thirds of the way out to the
rim. Shapley joined the Mount Wilson
Observatory, California, 1914.
