1787-1828. Zulu leader who formed a Zulu
empire in South Africa. He seized power from
his half-brother 1816, and embarked on a
campaign to unite the Nguni (the area that
today forms the South African province of
Natal), initiating the period of warfare
known as the Mfecane.
