Port and second largest city in Tunisia;
population (1984) 232,000. It is the capital
of Sfax district, on the Gulf of Gabes and
lies about 240 km/150 mi SE of Tunis.
Products include leather, soap, and carpets;
there are also salt works and phosphate
workings nearby. Exports include phosphates,
olive oil, dates, almonds, esparto grass, and
sponges.
