1940- . Writer, historian, and traveller who has re-enacted several `classic' voyages. In 1961 he led a motorcycle team along the Marco Polo route in Asia and four years later canoed the length of the Mississippi. His Brendan Voyage 1977 followed the supposed transatlantic route taken by St Brendan in the 7th century; the Sinbad Voyage took him from Oman to China 1980-81; the Jason Voyage followed the ancient route of the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece 1984; the Ulysses Voyage took him from Troy to Ithaca 1985; and a journey on horseback retraced the route to the Middle East taken by the Crusaders 1987-88.
