1859-1891. French artist. He originated, with
Paul Signac, the Neo-Impressionist technique
of Pointillism (painting with small dabs
rather than long brushstrokes). Examples of
his work are The Bathers, Asnieres 1884
(National Gallery, London) and Sunday on the
Island of La Grande Jatte 1886 (Art Institute
of Chicago). Seurat also departed from
Impressionism by evolving a more formal type
of composition based on the classical
proportions of the golden section, rather
than aiming to capture fleeting moments of
light and movement.
