1896- . Russian physical chemist who made
significant contributions to the study of
chemical chain reactions. Working mainly in
Leningrad at the Institute for Chemical
Physics, in 1956 he became the first Russian
to gain the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, which
he shared with Cyril Hinshelwood.
