1905-1989. Italian physicist settled in the
USA, who in 1955 discovered the antiproton, a
new form of antimatter. He shared the 1959
Nobel Prize for Physics with Owen
Chamberlain. Segre had earlier discovered the
first synthetic element, technetium (atomic
number 43), in 1937.
